Whitehouse Statement on Beginning of Second Trump Impeachment Trial

Statement

Date: Feb. 9, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) released the following statement today on the beginning of the second impeachment trial of former president Donald Trump in the Senate:

"My Republican colleagues cannot make excuses for avoiding impeachment. The former president incited violent insurrection to obstruct constitutional duties of a coequal branch of government. He must be held to account. That is why I look forward to a full and fair impeachment proceeding. The House managers will put the record before us; Mr. Trump will be given the opportunity to defend that record; and Senators are expected to hold their oath to uphold the Constitution beside the facts. I hope my colleagues listen carefully and consider how history will remember their judgment of Mr. Trump."
